MY ROLE
I guided the interns in user research and data analysis.
I also presented a new app feature to the CEO.

Problem
The pain point of Bondit is that users are confused as to how to use Bondit because there are too many features.
HMW
How might we help Gen-Z college students better bond with their peers through Bondit?
Solution
Bondit can incorporate an anonymous board feature where students can communicate with peers with similar interest

User Research
I performed 8 exploratory user interviews with college students, ranging in age from 17 to 21, using Zoom.
Goal
-
To identify the targeted users’ needs and analyze the user behavior when socializing via social media applications.
Sample questions
-
What are your expectations when it comes to college networking?
-
What is your ideal when it comes to college networking?
-
What are your concerns when it comes to college networking?
-
How do you think social media apps affect college networking?
User research insights
A thorough examination of transcripts and open coding resulted in the identification of 3 primary user behaviors.

About Bondit
Bondit is a social media app specifically created for college students to bond with college peers.
Bondit’s goal is to promote networking among US college students through various features such as scheduling, chatting, and more.
The app was first launched in 2020 by Ryan Pai, a New York University

Low-fidelity prototypes
After discussing with the stakeholders, I created a list of functional and non-functional requirements for Bondit's new feature.
Some of the functional requirements I had:
-
An anonymous open group chat
-
Have default option topics and enable the user to create an open group chat with a topic of interest.
-
Expose" someone's real name or identity (options: 30 mins, 1 hour, 1 day).
-
Users must verify their real name, school email, graduation year, major (if any), and relationship status (optional) when creating an account
Meeting such requirements, I designed a low-fidelity prototype for usability testing.

Usability testing
I conducted usability testing with 9 college students to assess potential users' responses to the new feature.
Goal
-
Learn more about the usability of the new feature: anonymous open chat room.
Sample questions
-
What do you think is the purpose of the feature?
-
What is your impression of the feature?
-
Would the feature be useful?
-
How would you improve the usability of the feature?

Usability testing insights
✅ Passing tasks
-
All users immediately figured the presented feature was for the open chat
⛔️ Failed tasks
-
Users mentioned that the open chat feature is something that exists in other social media platforms
❗️ Prioritized improvements
-
Need an attractive feature within the open chat related to revealing other user’s real names

Reflection
Observing interns' development and the confidence they acquired in addressing design challenges was highly rewarding.
I enjoyed fostering open dialogue and collaboration to leverage diverse team perspectives.
Guiding interns through the iterative refinement process, witnessing their responsiveness to feedback, and refining even the smallest details were sources of satisfaction for me as a leader.
User research analysis
In the process of extracting insights from user research, I utilized open coding to pinpoint patterns and themes. Following this, I seamlessly translated these findings into actionable UX design elements by constructing an affinity diagram using Figjam.
Below, you'll find sample images depicting the open coding and affinity diagram processes.
